Contrasts between light and shadow is a known method to lead the viewers eyes. Usually it's not a good idea to set a famous subject into the shadow then, but I think: For a subject which got already photographed millions of times, like the "bridge of sighs" in Venice, where you can't go around and try all too many perspectives, it helps to set it into scene in a different way in the one hand and adds a feeling of depth at the ohther hand.
